Claude Pricing 2026: Is It Free, and What Do Pro and Max Cost?
Short answer: Claude has a free plan and it covers most everyday work. Paid plans start at 20 dollars. Below is what each plan includes and who actually needs which.
Is Claude free?
Yes, Claude has a free plan. You can sign up at claude.ai and start using it without a credit card. The free plan has a daily message limit, and when you hit it you wait a few hours.
What the free plan includes:
- Roughly 30 to 100 messages a day. Anthropic does not publish an exact number, the limit shifts with usage intensity.
- Chat, file uploads and image reading.
- Projects and Artifacts, both opened to the free plan in February 2026.
- App connectors.
The strongest models are not on the free plan. It is enough for daily writing, summarizing, translation and general questions, but you hit the limit quickly on long coding tasks or large document analysis.
Plans and pricing
| Plan | Monthly price | Usage capacity | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 0 dollars | Basic | Trying it out, occasional use |
| Pro | 20 dollars | About 5x free | Daily users |
| Max 5x | 100 dollars | 5x Pro | Heavy use, long coding tasks |
| Max 20x | 200 dollars | 20x Pro | Running agents all day |
Pro drops to 17 dollars a month billed annually. Anthropic updates pricing from time to time, so confirm on claude.ai before deciding.
Is Sonnet 5 free?
Claude Sonnet 5 was opened to everyone including the free plan in June 2026. So the free plan does give you access to a strong model. The message limit still applies though, model access and usage allowance are separate things.
The top tier models sit on paid plans: Claude Opus 5 is the strongest model on Pro and the default on Max.
Which plan should you get?
Stay on free if
You use it a few hours a week and rarely hit the limit. For most people the free plan genuinely suffices.
Get Pro if
You use it daily and hit the limit several times a week, or you need the strongest model. Twenty dollars pays back easily if it saves you an hour a day.
Consider Max if
You run long coding tasks through Claude Code or agent work all day. Max is essentially for developers and heavy users. If you are not constantly hitting limits on Pro, you do not need Max.
API pricing is separate
The prices above are for the chat app. If you want to wire Claude into your own software you use the API and pay per use. For per million token pricing see the live model table.
A practical note: if you use the chat app, token math never comes up. You pay a flat monthly fee and your limit is measured in messages.
Are there discounts?
Annual billing brings Pro from 20 to 17 dollars a month. Beyond that there is no standing discount campaign. For student or organizational pricing check Anthropic's own page, those terms change over time.
Getting your money's worth
Upgrading does not automatically improve output quality. The same weak prompt produces weak results on the most expensive plan. Looking at your prompt writing habits pays more than upgrading. The free prompt library has ready made templates and the five part prompt formula.
