Claude for Google Workspace: AI Inside Docs, Sheets and Slides

Claude for Google Workspace is an extension announced by Anthropic on October 6, 2026 that brings Claude directly into Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides. It appears as a sidebar next to your open file, reads the document and edits it in place. A single installation covers all three apps. The extension is currently in beta and available on all paid Claude plans.

As a corporate AI trainer and consultant, I see this as a meaningful release for one simple reason: a huge share of everyday knowledge work happens inside Google Workspace. When AI works inside the file instead of a separate tab, the copy-paste shuttle and the formatting breakage that comes with it disappear.

What does Claude for Google Workspace do?

The extension focuses on different jobs in each app.

Claude in Google Docs

Claude reads the open document and makes sentence-level or heading-level edits while preserving formatting. Larger revisions are not applied silently. They are presented as approvable cards in the sidebar, so the author stays in control of the document.

AI in Google Sheets

Sheets is where the capability set runs deepest. Claude writes formulas, builds pivot tables and charts, and adds new tabs. For heavier jobs like data cleaning and merging, it runs Python and writes the results back into the spreadsheet. It can also build financial models. Building presentations with AI in Google Slides

In Slides, Claude generates new slides using the deck's existing theme and layouts, so your corporate template stays intact. It also catches overflowing or overlapping elements. The biggest weakness of AI-generated presentations, slides that ignore the template, is directly addressed by this approach.

Two editing modes: who is in control?

1. Ask before edits: Claude requests your approval for every change. This is the mode I recommend for corporate use and sensitive documents.
2. Accept all edits: Claude applies changes directly. Useful for fast drafting.

Connectors, skills and external files

The connectors and skills you have set up in Claude also work inside the extension. You can reference external files such as PDF, CSV and Office documents. For example, you can ask Claude to evaluate data from a PDF report together with the table in your spreadsheet.

Privacy and access scope

The privacy rule is clear: Claude only sees the file you currently have open and the connectors you have enabled. It does not access your entire Drive.

One limitation to know: the extension works with a single file at a time. For work that spans multiple files, you need Claude on the web or the desktop app.

Step-by-step installation

1. Open the Google Workspace Marketplace and find the Claude extension.
2. Install it. One installation covers Docs, Sheets and Slides.
3. Sign in with an account on a paid Claude plan. The beta is available on all paid plans.
4. Open a file in Docs, Sheets or Slides. The Claude sidebar appears next to the document.
5. Choose your editing mode: "Ask before edits" for change-by-change approval, or "Accept all edits" for direct application.
6. Use Chrome, Edge or Safari. The extension works in these three browsers.

For organizations, admin deployment is available in addition to individual installation, so IT can roll the extension out across the whole domain.

Who uses it for what?

Where it sits next to Gemini and Copilot

Google offers its own Workspace AI with Gemini for Workspace, and Microsoft offers Copilot for the 365 apps. Claude for Google Workspace adds a third option to that picture: teams that already use Claude can now work inside Google files without switching models.
